Hi,
My first post on this forum and I hope to get some advice from you guys (and girls) since at the moment I'm a little stuck...
So, I taught English in Taiwan for 2 years with no official qualifications other than a TEFL certificate and a BA in English lit.. It was a good experience and I really enjoyed the teaching. So much so that I decided to do (on my co-teachers recommendation who also did the same course) the MA TESOL course at Durham University. I signed up, was offered a place, and accepted.
I've recently returned home (the UK) from Taiwan and am starting to have serious doubts about the course, and have instead considered deferring for a year, doing a CELTA in London and instead working in London in language schools to kind of try it out. What would be the likelihood of finding work come October do you think? Would this be a difficult venture? I'm not sure what the job market is like for ESL teachers within London.
As far as I can see, I am at a distinct juncture. Durham or London. CELTA or MA. CELTA now, MA later (if at all)? Or just go ahead and get my masters since I'm already signed up and worry about the rest later?
I hope I've made the reasons for my indecision clear, and would really appreciate some advice on how to best get started on a career in ESL especially considering I don't want to end up having to work outside of my own country all the time, and would have opportunities of (good) work within London.
Thank you for any replies!
Nick. |
