I am applying to several programs in the California State University system and want to get feedback from any past graduates. Are there any on this ESL Forum. I need help!
I am looking for information on Professors, special program emphasis (ie E-learning, multi-media in the classroom), and the amount of practical teaching experience and observation.
Thanks for any wisdom you can impart. |

I graduated from Dominguez Hills and the program has its good points and bad points.
A number of the minority students had trouble conveying the essential points (whether it was grammar, teaching methods, etc). One Korean insisted on giving 90 min. lectures. A Mexican insisted on doing PPT presentations (her BA was in Industrial Design).
However, the biggest flaw in their program was Burkhard Mohr, the phonology prof. He has 30 years teaching experience and he still teaches it the way it was taught 30 years ago. He comes in and lectures. Minimal writing on the board. He treats phonology as a sort of "puzzle" that needs to be solved with a set of rules that you are given. To make matters worse, he still speaks in heavily accented English which makes it difficult to understand him. He is truly a dinosaur that should have retired long ago. Unfortunately, phonology is a required subject and his classes are mandatory. Easily the worst part of the program.
The upside??? Tuition is cheap for residents and scholarships are available for students.....just claim that you are an underrepped minority.. |
