I am looking for a child friendly employer/ destination has anyone any recommendations?
I would also like to hear from anyone who has children and is planning on teaching abroad this year.
It would be good to hear from anyone out there who is already doing it too![/b] _________________ I am interested to hear from any single parents who have found child friendly employers. I am also keen to hear from esl tutors with children, who have any tips on good destinations/ employment opportunities. |

Hi there Max!
I have been teaching for 18 years. But this is my 2nd year of teaching outside my home country, Philippines. Presently, I am in Croatia teaching preschool children English as a Second Language. I do not exactly know what information you need. Are you looking for a teaching job? I saw that you are from London. Am I right? I am sure that there are a lot of interesting developmental schools there that you could apply in. Anyway, please tell me what you want to know in particular about teaching children and I would be glad to share with you my knowledge in this area.
All the best!

Hello Max,
Thanks for posting your message.. I've been wondering the same thing myself. I'm sorry I don't have much information for you except that I have a friend in Istanbul teaching English who says her child is able to attend the school she teaches at free of charge. I will be watching this post however to see if someone else has any experience to share with us. I am currently taking the teacher training course and I have a seven year old. I am hoping that we can integrate some years of travel into our family plan and I hope, and trust that I'll find places to work where she can even help me to teach the class. She is very articulate and I think she'll have a lot to teach the other children. This is my hope. But for now I am just going to see about a job in Toronto, Canada, where I currently live and have childcare set up. |

Hi,
I actually joined this forum with a similar question in mind. I have been teaching in the UK since getting my CELTA in July 2004, but would now like to start teaching abroad (Spain would be a good start) & I would be travelling with my 8 year old daughter. Anybody who could share their experience with similar circumstances would be very helpful. I am looking maybe, for a start, for a full school year, starting in september 2005...what are the odds of finding such a job with a child in tow (one that would benefit them too)? Thanks for any advice |

Phoenix,
What do you mean by the statement above? Do you mean that would have health benefits etc. for children? Or cultural benefits? I'm not sure I understand.

Thanks CC. I suppose I mean essentially how helpful potential employers would be in helping with accomodation, a list of local schools for my child to go to...Or even how likely would they be to employ me. I would have assumed that in terms of health the same would apply to my child as would to me...I haven't really thought that far yet. For the moment I am seeking advice and information, the more decisive step would come from what has been found out. For the moment Spain seems to be the country of choice, as I will need to travel back to England occasionally and have my eldest travel to me during holiday periods. In terms of cultural benefit, I think that the very fact we'd be travelling together would be a bonus for her, but i would like to be sure that when I'm at work she's at school... |

I think you'll have to try your luck... I'm a mother of two teaching in Korea since May 2005. When I began job searching I found another single mother of one child online. She had been teaching in Korea for some time and she gave me some tips. I was told by some recruiters that no one would hire a teacher with two kids. I was initially discouraged but within a couple of months I had offers from more than one employer willing to hire and provide accommodation for me and my family.
I chose a small city. My employer has been very supportive. I live in a two bedroom apartment which is furnished and paid for by the employer. I found an international christian school which charges the same tuition for two as they do for one child. _________________ "Your playing small doesn't serve the world. Who are you not to be great." I'm seeing a few options for people that have school age children, but what about for people with babies? When I graduate in May, my son will be less than a year old. Is it feasible to work in this field while raising a baby? Are there any opportunities for teachers with young children? |

I'm curious how your job or job search is going... and if you have had any success with Spain. My child is 8 now and I have been teaching here in Toronto for about a year now. We would very much like to leave and go to the UK (I am also a UK citizen so I can work there) and are particularly interested in Greece. But Spain would be lovely too. I've begun tutoring online and I find that is a great way to make a living with a child at home(mine is homeschooling now) if only I could get fully booked. However I do miss the classroom. Jobs in esl are very hard to come by here, and even more scarce are the good paying ones.... Last summer I worked like a dog and made only enough for a new pair of sandles.
Anyway, cheer me up with your news please! |
