Dear All

I hoping that there is someone out there who can clarify which qualifications are needed to work in Canada as a ESL teacher. I have a CELTA certificate and a degree and I'm native English..Are they likely to employ me instead of a canadian?
If any one can help i'd be really grateful

A Canadian national or resident would be given priority. Depending on where you are from, it might be difficult to get working papers as an ESL teacher in Canada, if not impossible.

For most teaching positions, you will need a degree related to teaching. CELTA or other certificate courses may be taken into consideration for employment, but the degree is of much more importance.

Hello!
To become an ESL teacher in Canada you have to be certified by one of the TESL Canada affiliates (www.tesl.ca). In order to be certified, you have to have obtained your TESL certificate in one of their accredited institutions. Certification also requires that you have 50 hours of practicum experience in which ever program you did (30 hours observation, 20 hours supervised teaching). It is difficult to get a job teaching ESL in Canada unless you have this certification.

Good luck!
