2002 UPDATE:
The fun times are over in China thanks to COVID and the hell it caused for foreign teachers in China. In 2018 we had 502,000 foreign workers of which 32,000 were foreign teachers. Half of these teachers went home for the 2019 Christmas Holidays and then got locked out with closed borders caused by COVID.
Since then so many travel restrictions and lock-downs made life difficult for those who stayed, especially since locals were discouraged from socializing and dating foreigners who became more and more isolated. So many of our colleagues have left leaving roughly 9,800 laowai teachers in China. Fortunately those who are toughing it out are earning an average of 25,000 rmb a month and are getting more benefits than before.
Meanwhile the Chinese govt. have instructed all the public and private schools to give hiring preferences to bi-lingual Chinese teachers who have studied abroad. Perhaps when COVID solutions are found for China thing may change. But for now almost all the great bars and clubs in China have closed and foreigners are being isolated in China foreign teachers.
