You definitely live in Poland I think, I can tell by your forum handle. I saw that great Robert Benini movie years ago in Poland, "Around the World by Night". You know the one where he's a cab driver in Roma? It was called something "Zema" so your handle gives away your location, busted!
I'm guessing you're close to the border, so maybe Wroclav/Breslau. I'm German so got to call it by its real name. |

Good detective work, Scooby, but try again! All those countries have Slavic languages, most of which have a related word for "Earth." I am close to two borders, but not with Germany.
Does anybody know the Polish/Czech/Ukrainian/Russian for COLD WINTER? I think this one is setting records! Relevant to jobs forum, because you need to consider your resistance to below-zero temperatures before you decide to come!

I don't know about no dang old "zimny pogoda" or whatnot (I prefer "lato") but that there Zima's some kind of clear girlie drink I tell ya what. Malted, they say.
Say scoobs, with all that talk about Breslau and Danzig: are you a german shepherd? Always thought you were a great dane myself. They still serve up them "big boss" drinks in Deutschland? Good hootch I recall.
How's the ESL biz there? Berlitz?

The secret is out, Shaggy, you giving that info away? Indeed, Scooby Doobie is a German Shepherd in sheep's clothing. Actually, I was born in Germany, physically speaking at least.
OK Czinka you got me, how's Bratislava then (my next guess as to your location). I know of that great school there, the Calendonian, some great Canadian Guys run that and I know they were one of the pioneer TESOL courses in the region. I met one of the recruiters at the TESOL conference in Orlando in 1997, and I know other people who have said good things about that school. You know them?
My Scooby Hat is off to you with the mention in last night's newsletter, you are really popular. I'm referring to your quote, maybe I'll get in there next if I keep posting like this.

Well, I don't know where that guy is - he says close to Budapest - maybe Vienna? Not a post communist country..so maybe another city in Hungary? Or maybe Bucharest?
I'm in Budapest and have a love-hate relationship with the place.
I think if I had an expat salary and an expat flat and expat car or at the very least an an expat husband with all of the above, I'd like it more 
No seriously - the culture is very affordable and that is what keeps me here year after year. I have seen some of the most amazing concerts and performances here.
As for teaching in Budapest?
Sometimes I think maybe I should try Poland, I keep hearing great things about the place as I also do about Moscow.

Hold on there scoobster...the girl gotta give us a dang ole 'nother clue man.
Thought you were a detective with that "mystery" van of yours and all. Can't you tell it was Mr. Johnson who dunnit all along?
I remember that time old scooby and gang went to bonnie Scotland. How'd they drive that shagadelic-van of theirs over there so quick anyway (on the wrong side of the road too)? Ask your ESL class to solve that mystery. Or, you could ask them why Alf is still popular in post-Communist Europe (that's our revenge for them Swedes givin' us them commie-Smurfs).

Ha! And you guys think it's so cold and you need more Russian gas to keep you warm...
You think it's cold there! We had -35 degrees here last year...and that's Celsius and we're on the sea.
But yes, it seems that this winter might be a cold one too.
For languages being similar, I like the word "Pozor". Where you are it comes from Old Slavic to be a bit different word than it does here. We have great laughs about language when were in your area.
On location: Middle of Europe near two borders...and drives of 4 to 5 yours from cities...post-industrial...I'll vote for Brno, Czech Republic. It fits all of the above distances and locations. |

| I would recommend focusing on Eastern Europe. These are countries with similar cultures, which will help in many ways to avoid the barrier. The training will also help in communication and exchange of experience between different countries. |
