One thing I've noticed over the years is we have en extremely prissy, schoolmarmish discipline. I guess it has something to do with the whole residual "missionary" aspect of going to other countries and teaching the natives to be civilized, though very few of us (I hope) think of it that way.
It's really hard to find a textbook that doesn't feature some preachy section on the evils of smoking, or similar puritanism. There's almost nothing reflecting the real attitudes of modern-day young adults on things like sex or alcohol and drugs. Indeed, there's generally no mention of these things, period. I realize a lot of this is "lowest common denominator" stuff to offend as few, and thus sell as many, as possible, and one can always have great fun teaching against the text, but wouldn't it be great to have materials that were at least somewhat more adult in their orientation?

I teach it all, but I work into it slowly, in steps, and pay close attention to each students eyes and hands for any signs of nervous or upset behavior.

Then right before it gets dirty, I ask directly, will anyone be in any way upset if we talk about ____ ?

Of course they all say "no", but if any of them feel in any way a polite "no" then I ask those who are interested to take a lesson together requesting the topic.

Or I set a lesson date in the future where students know it will be discussed.

I'm an employer now though, and honestly if I had an employee I didn't like, that'd be right there at the top of the list of reasons to get rid of them lol.

I don't ever use curse words. I steer away from it because of the possibility of people other people finding out. Usually the context is lost in translation and the fact of the matter is.. dropping the F bomb in class is a big nono.

Don't get tricked into using it from students either! Be smart and avoid the question.
