Since this forum category seems to have become the dumping ground for things people write about the language and teaching, I'll add another...
If you have ever wondered why some modals like shall or will behave one way, while others like going or want behave another, while others like ought, need, and dare have even different behaviors, then this paper may be of interest to you.
http://calleteach.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/structural-classification-of-english-modals/
It provides a scheme of classifying the various modals in English based on their structure, behavior, and syntactic effect on the utterances in which they appear.
If you're not a linguist, don't worry. It's written in simple terminology and the concepts discussed are thoroughly explained.
From a teaching standpoint, it provides quite a bit of background knowledge which should help in answering those lovely "but why" questions our students love to throw at us.
I hope you will take a look and welcome any discussion. _________________ The first step to teaching is realizing that you don't know nearly enough yourself.

What on earth does whatever you're talking about have to do with the topic of this thread? _________________ The first step to teaching is realizing that you don't know nearly enough yourself.
